Specimens in Reserve | BOTANICAL
Specimens in Reserve parte del impulso humano de clasificar, preservar y asignar valor. El acabado metálico, el vidrio y el carácter irrepetible de cada pieza recuperan la memoria material de daguerrotipos y ambrotipos, procedimientos que formaban la imagen directamente sobre placas de metal o vidrio. La serie no reproduce estas técnicas, sino que reinterpreta su concepción material de la fotografía mediante un procedimiento contemporáneo. También invierte su dispositivo de protección: el vidrio sostiene la pieza, pero la imagen permanece expuesta.
El término «en reserva» contiene una promesa ambigua: aquello que se aparta parece quedar protegido, pero también permanece retenido, disponible para su uso en un futuro incierto. El formato circular remite a una lente, una placa de cultivo y un objeto votivo. La nomenclatura taxonómica ordena las piezas como un archivo.
La serie pregunta qué decidimos preservar, bajo qué condiciones y quién ejerce esa decisión, revelando que toda promesa de permanencia es, en último término, una ficción.
¿Quién decide qué cuerpos, especies, capacidades... deben preservarse, administrarse, mantenerse en reserva o impedirse?

TAXONOMÍAS
La artista fotografía especímenes humanos, botánicos y zoológicos y transfiere después esas imágenes sobre oro o plata auténticos aplicados al vidrio.
Algunas piezas contienen alteraciones que modifican un rasgo esencial del espécimen. Parte de estas obras se integran en la cápsula Survival Morphologies, centrada en formas botánicas especulativas en las que cada transformación responde a una presión ambiental concreta y plantea una posible estrategia de supervivencia: almacenar, proteger, regenerar, cooperar o desarrollar nuevas formas de adaptación.
Estas variaciones introducen una duda sobre la identidad de aquello que se conserva: hasta qué punto un organismo puede transformarse y continuar siendo el mismo.

Izaskun Valmaseda
Izaskun Valmaseda is a Basque photographer and visual artist based in Madrid. Her practice is rooted in fine art and conceptual photography, extending into self-portraiture, photomontage, video art, and hybrid creative processes. Her background in the performing arts shapes an image-making approach based on mise-en-scène and a precise attention to gesture, light, color, and presence.
Characterized by strong symbolic resonance, her work explores themes of identity, desire, memory, power structures, and vulnerability. Her images combine meticulous visual craftsmanship with restrained atmospheres, creating a beauty that is at once delicate and fierce, intimate and political, seductive and unsettling.
In her more recent work, photography shifts toward the object through techniques such as manual transfers, glass, precious metals, and lenticular printing. Traces, losses, and process-related accidents cease to be mere imperfections; instead, they become integral to the work’s meaning, revealing the gap between the desire to preserve an image and its inevitable transformation. In her lenticular pieces, multiple images coexist on a single surface, overlapping and dissolving without fully replacing one another—thereby challenging the notion of identity as something singular and stable.
She is a co-founder of Interludio Visual, a transdisciplinary creative and research collective that brings together artists, musicians, and scientists to develop collaborative projects involving installation, video, and spatial or sensory experiences.
She regularly collaborates with art galleries and auction houses, and her work has been exhibited in Spain, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands. Her recent distinctions include the Adobe MAX Creativity Award (Photography | Personal), 1st Place in Conceptual Photography – Professional at the Chromatic Awards, Best Digital Artist at the Click Masters Awards, and recognition as a Featured Artist by ViewSonic ColorPro.
