“Accept our body”, what a terrible concept for women. Accepting means assuming that you’re imperfect. That you have to love yourself DESPITE your body.
Theoretically, you know the lesson: The important thing is health, loving yourself, not heeding to beauty standards, hurtful comments… But it’s difficult to get a healthy look at yourself. Everything is tainted with the pressure to fit into established canons, feeling guilty when you’re not able to celebrate your body. And even more guilt for having those feelings not being clearly obese, clearly ugly, clearly imperfect…
We all have been held responsible for how we feel within society, so we must be able to go against the current and avoid anything that hurts us, that makes us unhappy and not loving each other without reserve. Forced to love our body so as not to appear weak. Guilty if we accept our inability to love it fully and without prejudice.
But what to do? We can only smile and pretend that we are happy with what we see in the mirror when, in practice, in the real world, we’re still judged.
This series of photos represents different stages of my relationship with my own body. A polarized love/hate relationship in which I’m working on every day.
